WHO WILL WRITE OUR HISTORY? Presented by Dr. Veronica Esagui
Ilse Joseph was a German mother and violinist who lost her two teenage daughters in a concentration camp during World War II. Upon learning of their fate she dedicated the rest of her life to “Playing for Peace.” She practiced forgiveness and believed that educating the young about the past would help promote a better understanding towards the future of mankind. Her dedication and commitment touched thousands of youths and families and for that she was praised in person by the Queen of England, Pope John Paul II, and Golda Meier. She was awarded the MBE and the German Order of Merit. A box containing Ilse’s artifacts that have been in storage since she died in 1986 will be opened by her niece Dr. Veronica Esagui and made available for public viewing, at the Tualatin Public Library, Saturday, September 21st 2019, at 2:30 pm. Afterwards, the box will be shipped to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, in WA, DC.
I feel these artifacts and the stories behind them need to be seen at first hand by our community so that everyone understands how important it is for us not to allow hate to grow during these difficult times in our country and the world. Who will write humanity’s history, when there’s no one left to speak?
Audience participation is welcome, and at the end of the program there will be time for discussion and questions concerning the connection between the past and today. There is no charge for attending. https://www.tualatinoregon.gov/library/who-will-write-our-history
